Broadway Car Park, Maidenhead

Client: London & Aberdeen, on behalf of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead
Role: RIBA Competitions and Client Adviser

S Williams Architects was appointed by London and Aberdeen to support the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in the delivery of a new landmark car park and retail development in the centre of Maidenhead. The project formed a key part of the town’s wider regeneration strategy and was intended to enhance capacity and infrastructure in anticipation of the arrival of the Elizabeth Line.

The proposed scheme featured a state-of-the-art 1,400-space multi-storey car park to replace an existing, smaller facility serving shoppers, commuters, and visitors. Designed in collaboration with Allies and Morrison Architects, the development also included active ground-floor retail units, high-quality public realm, extensive EV charging, accessible parking, and park mobility services. A distinctive feature of the design was the 10-storey structure—one of the tallest car parks in the UK—accessed via elegant D-shaped ramps.

Sarah Williams worked closely with the design team to ensure that the architectural quality, facade articulation, and operational efficiency of the car park met the highest standards. Detailed attention was given to structural performance and how the design would support long-term flexibility and user experience.

Specialist car park engineers were brought in to advise on the complex technical requirements of a multi-level facility of this scale, helping to refine the innovative design and ensure robust functionality.

While the project was progressing well, a change in local government following elections led to a pause in the scheme as part of a wider review of the town centre’s retail strategy.
