House of Architecture Programme: New Collections Centre

Client: RIBA
Role: RIBA Client Adviser

The RIBA is the proud custodian of over 4.5 million items within its remarkable collection of books, manuscripts, drawings, models, photographs, and archives—spanning more than two centuries. Recognised by Arts Council England for its outstanding national and international significance, the RIBA Collection is one of the most extensive and diverse architectural resources in the world.

As part of a broader programme of investment, the RIBA has identified the need to create a new, purpose-built Collections Centre. This initiative responds to significant changes across the RIBA estate—most notably the redevelopment of 66 Portland Place—and to the conclusion of the partnership with the V&A in 2027. The new facility aims to resolve existing issues around capacity, storage conditions, and access, while supporting the ongoing care, research, and wider sharing of this invaluable collection.

The current storage arrangements present several challenges, including a dispersed estate, inadequate environmental conditions, limited growth space for new acquisitions, and a lack of dedicated areas for research and conservation.

With RIBA Stage 0/1 work now complete, a strategic brief has been developed to guide the next phase of this project.

Sarah worked closely with the Director of Architectural Programmes and Collections, the Director of Library, the Property Committee, Chair of the Board, CEO, and the appointed design team. She supported all aspects of the project, including the appointment of specialist consultants, and providing strategic advice throughout. Activities included preparing a detailed brief for the site search, identifying potential locations, and exploring partnership opportunities for the next and exciting stage.
